Mauritanian commercial Fishing License
Fishing is a very lucrative business which is well mastered in Mauritania
The fishing domain shall be segmented between what is called « Bottom fishing », « Pelagic fishing » (surface or average depth fishing) and « Specialized Fishing » (as special gears are required to catch the fish).
This classification is of importance, as the way to handle each case is different. Regarding the Mauritanian halieutic resources, keep in mind that:
♦ Bottom Fishing
The fish stock is clearly over exploited as there are more than 180 Mauritanian fishing boats and an additional 150 European ones fishing in Mauritanian waters.
The main reason for this is that it's an easy business: Pulling a trawl on the sea bottom is not very demanding and all fish caught can be sold for a good price, whether on the spot or in Europe.
♦ Pelagic Fishing
In such a case, we are more than far from any over exploitation. There are a lot of very attractive business opportunities to grasp.
♦ Specialized Fishing
There is just no over exploitation at all, however each type of catch needs to be addressed in a specific way.
In fact « Specialized Fishing » is a terminology which applies to five different type of catch:
1) TUNA
2) BLACK HAKE 3) Shrimp 4) Lobster (Palinurus mauritanicus),
5) Crawfish
